A Sit Down With…. B Young #RoadToAfronation

With summer quick approaching, one of the most anticipated festivals this year is the inaugural Afronation festival, taking place August 1st-4th in sunny settings of the Algarve, Portugal. It’s the first of it’s kind, and is right on the pulse of the pop culture and the Afrobeats takeover that’s bled over into the mainstream and produced a lot of incredible music in the last few years. B Young is one of the many artists set to appear on the summer line up, alongside the likes of P Montana, Maleek Berry, NSG, Yxng Bane, Stefflon Don alongside headliners Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy and many many more of your favourites.

After entering the scene strong, and producing one of 2018’s main soundtracks with his single 079ME.B Young’s been giving us solid bangers and we spoke to him about his upcoming Afronation appearance and what he’s got planned this year.

B Young shared that he’s working on new music, pictures of him in the studio with Wizkid surfaced online instantly making everyone curious. “I’ve got some more songs coming, but right now Juice and 079ME are my favourite songs to perform. 079ME is the one that really kicks off, and Juice is a different vibe. It’s more for the mandem.”

With his unique blend of Afro Swing and R&B esque melodies, we discussed the timing of Afronation, to which he agreed that the festival has come at the perfect time. “I think it’s probably the most exciting out of all the other festivals and I think the line up is my type of line up. It’s sick, it’s happening in Portugal so you already know it’s gonna be a mad ting. I expect it to be a little bit like Wireless maybe, but yeah it’s gonna be lit”.

Having released Juice earlier this year, he’s been working on his upcoming project and before stepping into the spotlight B Young was an engineer and producer. “I was always doing mic stuff, but professionally what I was doing was mixing and mastering but originally I’ve always started from recording.” Young explains how in the beginning he was actually trying to record his voice so that it would sound like people sound on TV and Radio, turning to everyone’s favourite self help tool Youtube for guidance. He begun teaching himself how to produce, record and everything in between which led to him then working with others on their music and recording process. Going on to say that, “in the meantime I was still making music, then it got to a point where we had a lot of music and we started releasing everything one by one”.

As a multi talented creative, B Young doesn’t take it for granted. He speaks about still sending records over to other producers and engineers to see ‘what flavour’ they can bring to his music. However at times, because he too is technically trained he ultimately knows exactly how he wants to sound. “The main thing with me being able to engineer and stuff is that I can experiment with my sound a lot more because a lot of people when they go in the booth and record that’s what they work with but with me I know what I can do with that sound instead of leaving it as it is and it definitely helps.”
